Introduction
This report is intended to contribute to the ideas on
architecture and urban design being debated by the Mayor and the Greater London Authority.

It has been written by representative London bodies with an interest in the built environment, co-ordinated by RIBA London Region.

The aim is to provide inspiration for better, bolder
architecture and urban design in London.

The report has been produced in the context of a number of recent policy documents:

• Our Towns and Cities: The Future (2000)
the Government’s white paper which sets out a
comprehensive, long term strategy for action to breathe
new life into towns and cities

• Towards an Urban Renaissance (1999) Urban Task Force,
which has provided much of the inspiration for a new
vision for urban regeneration

• Better Public Buildings (2000) DCMS, a concise strategy
for improving design quality in public buildings

• National design guidance, including:
- Streets for all (2000) English Heritage
- By Design (2000) DETR & CABE
- Urban design compendium (2000) English Partnerships
and the Housing Corporation
- Better public buildings (2000) DCMS

• National strategies for sustainable development, including:
- A Better Quality of Life (1999) and Building a
Better Quality of Life (2000) DETR
- Sustainable Urban Extensions: Planned through
Design (2000) The Prince’s Foundation

• Strategies for urban renewal, including:
- National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal (2000)
The Social Exclusion Unit
- Local Strategic Partnerships (2000) DETR
